Huruli Rasam / Horse Gram Rasam

Ingredients:

1/3 cup Horse gram / Huruli / Kudu

1/4 cup grated Coconut

2 Red Chillies

Grape sized Tamarind

1 large grape sized Jaggary

1 - 1.5 tsp Rasam powder

Salt to taste

2-3 florets of Garlic

1/2 tsp Mustard seeds

Pinch of Asafotida powder

3-4 Curry leaves

2 tsp Oil

Recipe:

Put horse gram, red chillies in a pan and fry them until horse gram starts spluttering and gives nice aroma for about 3-4 mins. 

Put this fried horse gram and red chillies in a cooker container. Add enough water, pinch of salt and pressure cook.(5-6 whistles)

Once the pressure goes off, keep little amount of cooked horse gram and put remaining thing in a mixer/blender. Add grated coconut, tamarind and grind it to smooth paste. (You can use the cooked horse gram water for grinding)

Put ground mixture, cooked horse gram which we kept aside in a vessel. Add rasam powder, required amount of water, jaggary, salt and bring it to boil.(Add other ingredients like chilly powder, tamarind water if required.) Keep the rasam in low flame for about 3-4 mins. Remove outer cover of garlic and mash it. Put mashed garlic, 2 tsp oil in a pan. Once it turns golden in color, add mustard seeds. Once it starts spluttering, add curry leaves, asafotida powder, keep it for few seconds and then add it to rasam. Mix well before serving. It goes well with Rice.

Huruli Balekayi Gasi / Sagu

Ingredients:

1 Large Raw Banana/ Balekayi

1/2 cup Horse gram / Huruli / Kudu

3-4 Red Chillies

3/4 cup grated Coconut

Pinch of Turmeric

Small grape sized Tamarind

Small lemon sized Jaggary

1/4 tsp Chilly powder

2-3 Curry Leaves

Salt to taste

1/4 tsp Mustard seeds

2 tsp Oil

Recipe:

Soak horse gram in water for about 8-10 hrs. Wash it properly and pressure cook by adding salt and water.(5-6 whistles)

Add tamarind and little bit of water in a bowl, mash it and keep it aside. Take off only the fiber from the outer cover of raw banana. Chop raw banana into small pieces and put it in a vessel containing water. Keep it aside for about 5 mins. Remove chopped raw banana from water and add to a vessel. Add jaggary, salt, tamarind water, pinch of turmeric powder, chilly powder, water and cook it well. Once it is cooked add cooked horse gram and mix well. Put 1 tsp oil, red chillies in a pan and fry them for about 1-2 mins until it gives nice aroma. Put grated coconut, fried red chillies in a mixer and grind it to smooth paste by adding sufficient amount of water. (If it is frozen coconut use hot water while grinding.) Add this ground masala to the vessel containing cooked banana and horse gram, bring it to boil and stir well. (Add water, salt if required.) Add mustard seeds and oil in a pan. Once it starts spluttering, add curry leaves and add it to Gasi. Mix well before serving. It goes well with Rice/Dosa/Rotti/ Chapathi/ Poori.

Huruli Chutney / Horse Gram Chutney

Ingredients:

3-4 tsp Horse gram / Huruli / Kudu

2-3 Red Chillies

3/4 cup grated Coconut

Salt to taste

Small grape sized Tamarind

1/2 tsp Mustard seeds

2 Curry leaves

1 tsp Oil

Recipe:

Put horse gram in a pan and fry it until it starts spluttering and gives nice aroma for about 3-4 mins. Add 1 tsp oil in a pan and fry red chillies for about 1-2 mins as shown in the picture below.

Put this fried horse gram and red chillies, tamarind and grated coconut in a mixer. Add enough water and grind it. (If it is frozen coconut, add hot water while grinding.) Pour the ground mixture in a vessel, add enough salt and water(If required). Put 1/2 tsp oil, mustard seeds in a pan. Once it starts spluttering, add curry leaves and add it to chutney vessel. It goes well with any kind of Dosas.
